I never realized this until seeing the detail, but this painting is most likely about the flu pandemic.

it’s really interesting seeing death portrayed as a woman 

Especially a a nurturer rather than a destroyer

I may be reading into this, but when I feel like I am going to cry and I not want to because there are people around, I look straight up and try to will the tears away. It seems like the pose of Death is aloof, but in actuality she may be suffering but not wanting to upset the children.
